Along with pumpkins, bats and black cats, witches' brooms are an iconic symbol for Halloween. Create your own witch's broom crafts to decorate your home for Halloween, create fun treats and favors for a party or to use as part of a holiday costume. These crafts are easy to make and will help bring some Halloween spirit to your home.
Witches' brooms can make cute favors for a Halloween party. Create a simple favor by painting the sticks of lollipops brown and gluing brown paper shreds or brown construction paper cut into narrow strips onto the wrapper to cover the lollipop for a sweet treat. Make a more elaborate treat bag by filling a paper lunch sack halfway with candy. Cut another brown paper bag into strips, leaving the bottom of the bag intact and stick the bag of candy inside of it. Place a small piece of wood or tree limb in the first bag as a hand and use a rubber band on the outside neck of the bags to hold them together.
Edible Witch's Broom
Use edible witches' brooms for refreshments at a Halloween party. Create a sweet and salty snack by shredding small pieces of gummy fruit candy and wrapping them around the bottoms of pretzel sticks to create colorful brooms. Create Parmesan broomsticks by mixing 2 1/4 cups of biscuit mix, 2/3 cup of milk, 1 egg and 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese in a bowl. Roll the dough into 30 1-inch balls. For each broomstick, roll one ball into the shape of a stick and attach another ball to the bottom. Press a fork into the second ball to make bristles for the broom. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes.
Mini Witches' Brooms
Students can take a homemade witch's broom to school to celebrate Halloween. Wrap double-stick tape at the base of a pencil eraser. Cut 3-inch strips of raffia or paper shreds and attach them to the tape. Add another layer of tape and attach another layer of the raffia. Wrap a black ribbon around the base of the eraser to secure the raffia. Younger children can use pipe cleaners and yarn to make mini broom sticks. Cut out 20 pieces of yellow or brown yarn approximately 7 inches in length. Fold the yarn pieces in half and tie a black or brown pipe cleaner around them. Twist the ends of the pipe cleaner together to create the broom handle.
Costume Witch's Broom
Create brooms to help accessorize a witch costume for Halloween. Younger children can create a broom by taping together two paper towel tubes and painting them brown. Using a large piece of yellow or light brown construction paper, cut strips in the paper, leaving at least 2 inches along the top edge of the paper uncut. Wrap the uncut edge around the base of the paper towel rolls and secure with tape or glue. For a fancier broom, purchase a plain straw broom from a craft store. Decorate the broom by wrapping Halloween-themed ribbon around the handle and spraying it with glitter.
