Social workers may work with patients dealing with a variety of illnesses, injuries or mental or physical disabilities. In addition to hospitals and other medical facilities, social workers may also find employment in nursing homes. The salaries of nursing home social workers depend upon their area of specialty and level of experience.

Child and Family Social Workers

Social workers who provide services to children and their families earned an average salary of $43,850 as of 2010, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Those working in nursing care facilities earned an average of $38,620 a year, while those in nursing and residential care facilities earned an average of $36,800. In the industry of services for the elderly and persons with disabilities, the average income of a child and family social worker was $38,440 a year.

Health-Care Social Workers

Health-care social workers work with patients suffering from chronic, acute and/or terminal diseases, earning an average salary of $49,200 a year as of 2010, according to the bureau. In nursing care facilities, the average salary of a health-care social worker was $43,890 a year, while those in nursing and residential care facilities earned an average of $43,410 a year. Health-care social workers in the industry of services for the elderly and persons with disabilities earned an average income of $41,400 annually.

Mental Health and Substance Abuse Social Workers

Social workers working with patients suffering either from mental illness or substance abuse addiction earned an average income of $41,880 a year as of 2010, according to the bureau. In nursing care facilities the average salary was $43,980, while in nursing and residential care facilities the average was $35,770 a year. These social workers also found employment in the industry of services for the elderly and persons with disabilities at an average salary of $39,850 a year.

Other Social Workers

Social workers working in administration, research and planning or making policies earned an average salary of $52,270 as of 2010, according to the bureau. Those working in nursing care facilities earned an average of $50,310 a year, while those in nursing and residential care facilities earned an average of $41,080. In the industry of services for the elderly and persons with disabilities, these types of social workers earned an annual average income of $41,150.
