Ice Cream Social Ideas for Sunday School

Ice cream socials can be an evangelization event.

Sunday School is an opportunity for adults and children to study the Bible in a small group setting. During the summer months, many churches are faced with attendance challenges as members take vacations. Because attendance is low during the summer months, many churches choose to hold special events to encourage participation and attract families back for Bible study. Ice cream socials are a nice way to fellowship after Sunday School. Children and adults enjoy an ice cream treat and the ingredients are easy to serve and relatively inexpensive.

  1. Build Your Own Sundae

    • After Sunday School, gather participants in the backyard of your church or in your fellowship hall. Make an assembly line of sorts, with toppings (whipped cream, sprinkles, melted chocolate, marshmallows). Give each participant a cone or shallow cup with a scoop of ice cream, then let them pass through the assembly line adding the ingredients they wish to the cup or cone.

    Fellowship

    • During the summer months, many Sunday School programs close down or combine due to low summer attendance. To combat the drop in attendance, invite the participants of a nearby church to join your ice-cream social (if they have cancelled Sunday School for the summer, you can invite them to attend your classes). Get an estimate of total attendants, so that you have enough ice cream for all. Use the event to get to know Christians from another church family.

    Evangelization Event

    • Ice cream is popular with children and adults, no matter what their religious affiliation or ties. Use your ice cream social as an evangelization event. Hold the ice cream social at a neighborhood park. Post signs so that the public is aware that you are giving out ice cream sundaes free. Have some flyers on hand to advertise your Sunday School program. Talk with people who drop by for a sundae informally about your church and the programs available for children and adults.

    Play an Ice Cream Game

    • Have an ice cream social in your Sunday School class among your students only. Use a game board such as Monopoly or make up your own game board. Place ice cream toppings (in a ziplock bag) on certain squares on the game board. Give each player a scoop of ice cream in a cup. Players roll dice and move along the game board. When they land on one of the squares with a topping, they can put the topping on their scoop. The idea is to get all of the toppings on your scoop first. (You may have to begin again several times before you have all toppings.)
