These managers are responsible for promoting the products or services offered by an organization. In addition, they develop pricing strategies for products or services that ensure both profits and customer satisfaction. The bureau reports that about 32 percent of marketing managers work in the finance and insurance industries.

As of May 2010, the 164,590 marketing managers employed in the U.S. earned a mean annual wage of $122,720, according to the bureau's Occupational Employment Statistics survey. The bottom 10 percent made $57,750 and the top 10 percent were paid a salary greater than $151,260. The median wage for marketing managers was $112,800. The bureau calculates mean annual wages by multiplying the mean hourly wage by 2,080 hours -- the average number of hours worked by full-time employees.

Computer systems design, the second-largest industry employing marketing managers, paid $140,090 per year. Oil and gas extraction led the list of highest-paying industries, followed by securities and commodity exchanges and "other financial investment activities."

The five states with the highest employment levels for marketing managers were California, New York, Texas, Illinois and New Jersey. They paid marketing managers mean annual wages that ranged from $113,220 in Illinois to $156,420 in New York. New York is the top-paying state for marketing managers, followed by New Jersey, Delaware, California and Virginia. There, marketing managers earned at least $136,590 per year. San Francisco, the highest-paying metropolitan area for marketing managers, paid them a mean annual wage of $161,440.

The bureau reports that employment for marketing managers is expected to grow by 12 percent through 2018. However, competition for available jobs is expected to be keen. Prospective marketing managers seeking jobs should note that manufacturing firms tend to pay more than non-manufacturing firms. Additionally, these managers may receive bonuses that can equal up to 10 percent of their salaries, the bureau reports.
