Many private schools, through donations and tuition fees, have the resources to provide students with learning opportunities, instructors and programs that public schools usually cannot afford. Private institutions regularly admit students from across the country as well as international students looking to get a head start on college.

  1. Boston Trinity Academy

    • Boston Trinity Academy is a private college preparatory school that focuses on high academic standards, unique learning opportunities and social justice issues. The admissions process is rigorous and competitive, much like a university, and includes a personal statement, recommendations, interview and tour and the Secondary Schools Admission Test (SSAT) or Independent Schools Entrance Examination (ISEE). International students must complete the same admissions process as domestic students with a few minor additions. Students must pay a registration fee that covers the cost of their I-20 student visa and submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TEOFL) or Secondary Level English Proficiency Test (SLEP). International students may have their interview via telephone or Skype if they are not currently in the United States.

    Boston University Academy

    • The Boston University Academy is a college preparatory school affiliated with Boston University. The school facilities are on the Boston University campus. Students have the unique experience of preparing for college on a university campus where they have access to the university libraries and students. The admissions process to the academy includes a student questionnaire, personal essay, school transcript, the SSAT, recommendations from three teachers and a school counselor. International students must also take the TOEFL exam and complete the normal admissions procedure.

Newman stresses the link between personal and intellectual growth and aims to nurture the whole student, not only the mind. Applicants must provide a teacher recommendation, personal essay, school counselor form, attendance record and take an entrance exam or the SSAT. International students must complete the regular admissions process and provide additional information. International applicants must provide academic transcripts for the previous two years, character references from an official at their current school, an immunization and health record and proof of financial support for the first year of tuition.

    St. Marks

    • St. Marks School is located in Southborough, Massachusetts, just 28 miles from Boston. The school's campus is reminiscent of a college campus with multiple buildings and dormitories, and the academics follow suit. The school's academic programs provide core learning, college level electives and small class sizes. The student admission process include an application, teacher recommendation, school report, the SSAT test, and an interview. International students are required to complete the application process, plus take the TOEFL exam.
