Genealogists searching their Indiana roots will find a vast array of resources in Indiana. The state has many libraries, archives both large and small, genealogy societies, historical societies and county courthouses. All of these resources can be accessed to locate genealogical information. Start in the county in which your ancestors lived and branch out to state resources from there.

County Courthouses

County courthouses in Indiana typically hold probate and will files, vital records such as birth, marriage and death, divorce records, court records and land records. Each record type will be held in a specific office within the courthouse. Laws on who may obtain each type of record may differ. For example, only those with a direct interest such as a documented legal, personal financial or immediate kinship may obtain vital records. Check with the courthouse when accessing records.
Indiana State Archives

The Indiana State Archives is located in Indianapolis. The archives houses genealogical records, land records, Native American land records, African-American history resources, census, naturalization, military and some vital records. The archives has some resources available through their website such as military, institution and death records, but most of their holdings are available only on-site in paper form.

Indiana Genealogical Society

The Indiana Genealogical Society provides genealogical resources for the entire state of Indiana. These resources are in the form of a blog, annual conference and seminars on various genealogical topics. The society provides members with a newsletter which comes out six times a year, the Indiana Genealogist which is the society's journal which is published quarterly, and discounts on publications and conferences. Members also receive access to over 500 databases available through the Indiana Genealogical Society. Membership in 2011 for individuals in the U.S. is $30 a year or $35 for a joint membership. Those living outside the U.S. pay $40 for an individual membership and $45 for a joint membership. Membership can be obtained by applying online or completing a membership application to mail in.

The state of Indiana has various archives located in libraries. One example is the Calumet Regional Archives located in Gary, Indiana, within the Indiana University library. The Calumet Regional Archives has a searchable online record holding database. The archives holdings contain personal papers for prominent Indiana residents, Gary resources, original bound newspapers, local area yearbooks and organizational records.
