What Should You Wear When it is 60 Degrees?

Save

Knowing what to wear when the weather is 60 degrees Fahrenheit can be a bit tricky. For some people, 60 degrees is cold weather, but for others, the same temperature feels warm. There are many factors to take into consideration when choosing your wardrobe for mild temperatures, including personal preferences, fashion considerations and what you’ll be doing.

Personal Preferences

Personal preferences are based on what makes you feel most comfortable. Different bodies regulate heat differently, so where one person may be chilly with goose bumps prickling their flesh, another person may be sweating in 60 degree temperatures. Different parts of one person’s body may respond to heat and cold differently, so you may be able to wear shorts if your legs feel warmer, but wear a long sleeved T-shirt to protect your arms. No one can tell you how to be comfortable better than you. If you’re dressing a child, the World Health Organization says children have thinner skin than adults. Children may feel colder than adults in the same temperature. You may not need to wear a jacket, but put on one the child just in case. The child can always remove the jacket if too hot.

Dress in Layers

Dressing in layers is the best bet for dealing with middling temperatures. Clothing can be worn or removed based on how your body is regulating heat. Wear skirts with leggings or tights, a long sleeved T-shirt under a short sleeved shirt. Wear a tank or short sleeved shirt under a front button long sleeved shirt. You can remove the shirt or roll up the sleeves if you’re too hot. Shorts can be worn beneath sweat pants and if you find yourself too hot, remove the sweat pants. Short sleeve dresses can be worn with jackets or sweaters, likewise, shirts made of thin fabrics can be paired with cardigans, sweatshirts, jackets or lightweight coats. Some people may find if they protect their head they retain body heat. Wear a fashionable knit cap with short sleeves and jeans.

Fashion

For the fashion conscious, attire is more complex than those dressing solely for comfort. “Redbook” magazine suggests mixing seasonal clothing pieces to accommodate 60 degree temperatures and remain comfortable. Mix summery white jeans or capris with button-down, long sleeved shirts over a tank or short sleeved shirt. Tanks or camis can be worn with long trousers or pants. Sleeveless or short sleeved dresses can be paired with cardigans, career jackets, blazers or lightweight fashionable trench coats. Evening wear, such as cocktail dresses, can be mixed with a dressy cardigan, a shawl or a fur stole. Scarves can be worn to retain body heat around the neck and shoulders over short sleeved or long sleeved shirts or dresses.

Daily Schedule

Determining what to wear in 60 degree weather should be based on what you intend to do during the day or night experiencing those temperatures. If you’re running outside, wear fabrics that keep moisture away from your skin. Keep in mind that your hands and feet may feel colder than the rest of your body if you’re playing sports, riding bikes or doing other outdoor activities. Prolonged exposure outside may require medium weight socks and gloves. When it’s 60 degrees outside and sunny, you may be tempted to forgo sunscreen because it feels cool, but warm. Temperature should not be used as a determinant for sun exposure risk. The World Health Organization says that sun exposure risk is highest when the sun highest in the sky (about noon), even with clouds. If you’re wearing shorts and short sleeves, don’t forget sunscreen.
