General Nutrition Centers (GNC) is a highly successful retailer in the nutrition and supplements market, but it is not without some significant competition. There are several other chain stores that are represented nationally with hundreds of stores. GNC also runs a popular online store, but there too it has competition.
Vitamin World is a retail chain that has over 400 store across the nation, compared to 4,800 retail locations for GNC. Its parent company, Nature's Bounty, Inc., also owns Holland & Barrett, which is a popular diet and nutrition supplement retailer in the United Kingdom. As a retail competitor to GNC, it does well and provides customers with a choice of products similar in scope and scale to that offered by GNC.
GNC also does very well as an online retailer, and one of its main competitors in the online retail space is iHerb. According to the popular traffic-ranking website Alexa, which ranks websites based on the amount of traffic it receives, the GNC website has a rank of 7,262, while the iHerb website has the better rank of 6,184. It offers a wide range of products, including a few product categories, such as cleaning supplies, that GNC does not.
The Vitamin Shoppe
The Vitamin Shoppe is another popular chain retailer that competes with GNC nationally. It has over 400 stores in 37 different states, compared to GNC's 4,800 retail locations in the United States. It offers 20,000 different products in categories similar to those offered by GNC. It also has a popular website that sells its products, but it is not nearly as popular as the GNC website.
VitaCost is one more retailer that competes with GNC in the online space. VitaCost's Alexa ranking is 4,987, which is significantly better than GNC's 7,262. Although VitaCost does maintain one retail store in Las Vegas, its business is focused primarily online, where it carries over 30,000 products. It has a similar product line to that of GNC, though it does not carry any of the fitness equipment that GNC does.
