The hit Broadway show "Wicked" follows Elphaba and Galinda while they are in high school, before they become the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch of the North. If you are a fan of the show, choose costume ideas to recreate your favorite character for your next costume party outfit. Alternatively, create group costumes and invite your friends to dress up with you.
The story revolves around how Elphaba, a girl born with green skin, grows as a person and eventually is labeled wicked. For an Elphaba costume, start with a solid black skirt that falls mid-calf and a black button-up dress shirt. Add a pair of black pantyhose and black or brown mid-calf boots. Paint any exposed skin with green face paint. Wear a pair of glasses with green lenses. Dye your hair black or wear a black wig. Style it straight or with one long braid. Carry an old-fashioned crooked broom. If desired, add a traditional black witch's hat to finish the look.
Elphaba's polar opposite is Galinda. To create her costume, choose a fuchsia pink dress. Choose a style that rests close to the knee and has lots of frills and volume. The top should be spaghetti strap, if possible. If you cannot find a fuchsia dress, choose a white one and dye it with fuchsia fabric dyes. Galinda has blond hair with lots of voluminous curls. If you can't pull off this look naturally, use a store-bought wig from the local Halloween supply store. Pin a matching fuchsia flower in your hair near your ear.
Just as the Wizard is important in the original story "The Wizard of Oz," he helps shape Elphaba into who she becomes in "Wicked." For his costume, start with an emerald green suit. Add gold binding to the suit's edges using a sewing machine. Replace the buttons on the suit with gold buttons. Wear an emerald green vest under the jacket and white dress shirt. Add an emerald green tie as well. To finish the look, wear a pair of wire-rimmed glasses.
Fiyero becomes the love interest of Elphaba. To create his costume, dress in a light green shirt and pair of dark brown pants. Tuck the pants into a pair of brown knee-high leather boots. Capture Fiyero's carefree style and ladies' man reputation by leaving the top few buttons unbuttoned.
