They also are in charge of the crew on board and their duties and oversee the loading and unloading of the ship when in port. Captains are in charge of boat maintenance while the ship is in the dock. The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics groups these professionals in with mate and water pilots.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the mean annual salary for this field was $70,500 and an hourly rate of $33.89 in 2010. Earnings in the 90th percentile were at or above $117,310 per year and $56.40 per hour. Those in the 50th percentile earned at or below $64,180 per year and $30.86 per hour in the same year. Earnings in the 10th percentile were at or below $30,690 per year and $14.76 per hour in 2010.

Earnings by Industry

The oil and gas extraction industry offered the highest mean annual wage of $91,430 and $43.96 per hour in 2010. Freight transportation had the second-highest mean annual wages at $89,090 and an hourly rate of $42.83. Scientific research and development services offered the third-highest mean annual salary at $84,150 and an hourly rate of $40.46. Various support services offered the fourth-highest median yearly compensation at $83,780 and $40.28 per hour in 2010.

Earnings by State

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that Tennessee offered the highest mean annual wage of $89,700 and $43.12 per hour in 2010. The state of Alabama had the second-highest mean yearly salary at $85,390 and $41.05 per hour. Texas offered the third-highest mean yearly pay of $84,880 and $40.81 per hour, while Missouri had the fourth-highest at $83,170 per year and $39.99 per hour. Delaware had the fifth-highest mean annual compensation of $81,540 and an hourly rate of $39.20 in 2010.

Earnings in Metropolitan Areas

Crew boat captains in the metropolitan area of Shreveport and Bossier City, Louisiana, had the highest mean annual salary of $105,660 and $80.80 per hour in 2010. Bridgeport, Stamford and Norwalk, Connecticut, had the second-highest median annual wage at $100,870 and $48.49 per hour. Camden, New Jersey, offered the third-highest mean annual pay at $88,960 and $42.77 per hour. The Cincinnati-Middletown area in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana had the fourth-highest mean annual wage of $88,180 and $42.39 per hour in 2010.
