Many shampoos and conditioners target specific hair needs. Whether you are looking for products that provide moisture to dry hair or volume to limp or thinning hair, you are likely to find a large variety of products. Grocery stores, drug stores and health food stores typically keep their shelves stacked with products aimed at improving the quality of hair and repairing damage. Several products also cliam to promote hair growth with varying degrees of success.
Ayurvedic Hair Care
Experiment with ayurvedic techniques which originate from India and are based on holistic methods of self care. In the age-old tradition of Indian women, who notoriously have full and healthy hair, use scalp oils made from coconuts, herbs, flowers and spices to promote healthy hair (sesame oil is also very popular with this method). By gently heating the oil and massaging it into the scalp regularly, you encourage a healthy metabolism and, thus, stimulate hair growth. Brahmi and Bhringraj are ready-made ayurvedic oils that can be purchased at health food and specialist stores. Once the oil is massaged into the scalp with the palms and fingertips (using small circular motions), leave on the hair for 15 minutes and rinse with a gentle cleanser. Allow hair to air dry.
Determine Your Needs
Establish whether your goal is simply to have longer, healthier hair or whether you actually suffer from hair loss. If hair loss is the issue, there are products designed to treat it. It is always advised, however, to speak with your healthcare provider before using products designed to tackle hair loss. Underlying health issues may be the cause of your hair loss. Rogaine (also known as Minoxidil) is available over the counter and is a topical treatment applied directly to the scalp. It is designed to regrow hair and slow hair loss. Propecia, available by prescription, is a pill aimed at reversing thinning hair and reducing hair loss. One-third of men that use propecia experience hair regrowth.
No known miracle products provide rapid, lustrous hair growth; focus on ways to restore the health of your hair, instead. You may already have products in your kitchen cupboard that can greatly enhance the health of your hair. Add tea tree oil to your regular shampoo to fight flakes. To add volume, combine an egg yolk, olive oil, 2 small ripe avocados and honey as a mask; shampoo and condition as usual after about 1 hour. To boost shine, add 1/4 cup of olive or jojoba oil from root to tip; provide heat for 5 minutes with a hair dryer for deeper penetration.
Keep It Simple
Monitor your hair's needs and keep your routine simple. Using too many products can further damage. Be patient; restoring hair health is a journey to longer hair.
