How Deep to Grow Radishes
Radishes are among the simplest garden vegetables to grow. They sprout in spring when temperatures are cool and mature within three to four weeks, depending on the variety. Plant radish seeds in spring two to three weeks before the last expected frost. Plant the seeds 1/4 to 1 inch deep in well-drained, light soil amended with organic matter, such as compost or manure and 2 cups of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 100 square feet of row.

The proper planting depth depends on your soil type. Plant radishes 1/4 inch deep in heavy clay soils. Planting them deeper may slow germination because clay soils tend to be cold and damp. Plant radishes 1/2 inch deep in loam soil. Plant them 1 inch deep in very light sandy soils. Water leaches quickly out of these soils and the seeds won't germinate if they become too dry. Burying them a bit deeper helps them retain moisture.

Pay attention to spacing in addition to the depth of planting. Thin spring growing varieties, such as Easter Egg or Cherry Belle, 1/2 to 1 inch apart when the plants stand 2 inches high. Space fall varieties, such as China Rose or Chinese White, 2 to 3 inches apart because these plants produce large radishes and need more room. Crowded radish plants may produce lush foliage, but stunted roots.

These varieties are not heat tolerant and grow quickly in cool, moist weather. A few heat-tolerant varieties, such as French Breakfast and Icicle, grow during the summer months. Fall radishes take longer to mature, have a more pungent flavor and store well for winter use.
