Only use fake jewels.

Transform old cigar boxes into decorative keepsakes to hold pictures, souvenirs and family treasures. Give these away as gifts or make several custom boxes for you own collection. Use paint, embellishments, plastic jewels and other goodies to craft a one-of-a-kind piece. Showcase these boxes on your mantle or keep them in your bedroom or closet.

  1. Floral Charm Boxes

    • Create a box adorned with charms, silk flowers, pressed flowers and other types of floral decor. First, paint the box purple, baby blue, yellow or any color of your choosing. Once the paint is dry, begin decorating the box with the types of flowers you want to use. You can cover the entire box or just create a flower border on the top or around the edges and sides. Glue animal, baby or other charms along the border or sides of the box, depending on the look you're going for. These boxes also look nice with a large flower on the top, surrounded by several smaller flowers. Experiment with silk roses, pansies, daisies and other flowers to create a floral masterpiece.

    Vintage Boxes

    • Decorate a vintage box to hold old photos, wedding keepsakes and family goodies. Paint this box white, brown, plum or black, depending on your color preferences. Decorate the border with white or brown vintage style lace. Then glue small pearls around the border, sides and top of the box. Glue a few silk roses or flowers on top of the box as a finishing touch. You may also want to glue on other vintage embellishments such as bottle caps, old stamps, keys and other goodies. Look for these online or in vintage shops.

    Jewels and Ocean Treasures

    • Craft a box that reminds you of the ocean and buried treasure. Paint this box yellow, baby blue or green. Glue tiny plastic green, red, purple or yellow jewels along the inside border of the bottom of the box. Use one main color or a rainbow of colors. Glue more jewels on the top, sides and border of the lid, but don't forget to leave room for ocean treasures such as miniature plastic star fish, seashells, and pebbles. Glue a large shell on top of the box or just focus on decorating with smaller pieces. Spray a thin coat of spray-on glue on top and then sprinkle gold glitter on top to resemble gold flecks of sand.

    Kids-Themed Boxes

    • Ask your kids to help create a kids-themed cigar box to hold small toys, hair ties and photos. Let your child paint the box purple, blue or any other bright color. Take them to the craft store and encourage them to pick out decorations for the box. Your son might want to glue tiny dinosaurs and modern lizards on the outside of the box while your daughter prefers princess-themed items such as small crowns, unicorns, ribbon and flowers with glitter added as a finishing touch.
