Plastic Canvas Butterfly Projects

Plastic canvas is a plastic grid with small squares that can easily be cut into various designs for use in needlepoint. Embroidery floss or yarn is threaded through the squares to create an image. Create colorful butterflies using plastic canvas for use in various applications around your home and garden.

  1. Magnet

    • Create a meaningful gift like the one found on ePatterns Centeral for a survivor, victim or family member of someone with cancer. Purchase a large sheet of plastic canvas and yarn in black, white and a shade that matches the color of their cancer. For example, pink for breast cancer or teal for ovarian cancer. Trace the outline of a cancer ribbon symbol with butterfly wings onto the plastic canvas. Be careful not to sever any squares. Use the black yarn for the outline of the wings and ribbon and for veins in the wings. Fill the inside of the wings and ribbon with the colored yarn. Cover the inside of the hole in the ribbon's loop with white yarn. Hot glue a magnet onto the back of the plastic canvas to make the butterfly into a refrigerator ornament.

    Window Decoration

    • Make an adorable window decoration like the one found on Free Patterns.com to overlook your garden using plastic canvas. Cut a large sheet of plastic canvas into the shape of a bear holding a flower. Also cut out outlines of two butterflies. Use yarn to cover the bear and flower in appropriate colors, with black outlining the edges of its appendages and the petals of the flower. Use a bright shade of yarn for the butterflies' wings and black for their bodies. Attach the butterflies to the bear's stomach and head with a shade of embroidery floss that matches the wings. Attach suction cups to the back of the bear with a brown embroidery floss and stick it to the outside of your window.

    Garden Decor

    • Make a couple of colorful butterflies to overlook your garden, like those found on the Leisure Arts Library website. Research the coloring of your favorite butterfly. For example, the monarch butterfly has black, orange and yellow in its wings. Trace a pair of butterflies onto a piece of plastic canvas and carefully cut them out. Butterfly cutouts may be available at your craft store as well for a more symmetric butterfly. Outline the butterfly's wings and bodies with black yarn. Add veins to the wings with the black yarn as well. Fill in the wings of the butterfly with appropriate colored yarn. Use hot glue and black embroidery floss to attach a wooden skewer to the back of the butterfly. Stick the skewer into the soil in your garden for a colorful decoration.

    Tissue Box

    • Plastic canvas is often used to create tissue boxes. Use two large butterflies to decorate your tissue box. Use a clear embroidery floss to sew five square pieces of plastic canvas together around your tissue box for a snug fit. Cut out two identical butterflies from plastic canvas that are slightly larger than the plastic canvas squares. Use colorful yarn to color in their wings and body. Make sure the butterflies remain identical. Use more clear embroidery floss to attach the butterflies vertically to opposite squares of the tissue box. Decorate the other two sides with miniature yarn butterfly designs. Leave the bottom blank so the tissue box will sit flat on the table.
