What Is Soul Numerology?

What Is Soul Numerology? thumbnail
The practice of numerology is at least 10,000 years old.

The use of numbers as spiritual guides began in ancient Egypt and Babylonia. But the modern practice of numerology is modeled after the teachings of Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician and philosopher. Numerology begins with five numbers. These numbers define different aspects of an individual and are meant to give guidance to a person's life. One of the five number is termed the "Soul Urge" or "Soul Number," although some numerologists also call it the "Heart's Desire" number.

  1. History

    • The first physical evidence of numerology is from ancient Egypt and Babylonia. These ancient civilizations produced a practice of assigning meaning to numbers called Chaldean which was cultivated by Hebrew communities. But these origins are obscure, as very little physical evidence of the practice exists. It was Pythagoras who taught a similar practice to his students in Greece. Although labeled a mathematician, Pythagoras' lessons focused more on concept rather than on hard fact. Assigning an emotional meaning to individual numbers was part of his conceptual teachings.

    Soul Urge Number

    • The "Soul Urge" number, or "Heart's Desire," is the key to an individual's life purpose. It is meant to elucidate the deep and unconscious desires of a person's soul. Numerologists ascribe these desires as being the true nature of an individual; behind the mask of her personality. The personality number is a different number and only reflects what you project to the outside world.

    Finding the Soul Number

    • The "Soul Urge" number is found by assigning a number to each vowel of your birth name. The numbers aren't values, just numbers. The letter "A" is "1," "U" is "3," "O" is "6," "I' is "9," and "E" is "5." The sometimes vowels are also accounted for, with the "Y" being "7" and the "W" that follows a vowel being "5." The numbers assigned for each name are added together to produce one number. These numbers are then added together to produce one, and so on until the numerologist has one single digit number. The final number is the "Soul Urge" number.

    Other Numbers

    • Other numbers are assigned to various aspects of a person's being. For example, the "Life Path" number is calculated from a person's birth date. This number represents the essence of the person, or who he is and will always be apart from other life changes. The "Expression" number, like the "Soul Urge" number, is calculated from a name, but using a different method. The simplest numerology reading comes from the day of birth. This number alone illuminates a talent that will help an individual along in life.
