Sand rails are hand-built off-road vehicles, custom designed to race and ride over sandy terrain such as beaches, sand dunes and deserts. Sand rails are lightweight, high-power vehicles that were originally inspired from the Volkswagen Bug automobiles of the 1960s and '70s. Sand Rails can be taken by trailer to an off-road park, and they are available for rent in many locations across the country.
The sandy beaches in and around Southern California and Daytona Beach, Florida, are the perfect terrain for sand rails. Sand rails also are available for rent along the sandy shoreline at Pismo Beach, California. They can be ridden on many of the beaches, and beach-front dunes throughout Southern California. Daytona Beach Dunes also has sand rails available for rent and ride in the sandy dunes and beaches.
Lake Michigan is one of the largest inland lakes in the country, and off the eastern shore of the lake are hundreds of miles of sand dunes suitable for sand rail racing. From Saugatuck on the southern edge of the sandy dunes northward through Silver Lake, to Ludington and Sleeping Bear Dunes State Park, sand rail owners can camp and run their ORVs up and down the shoreline at designated off-road parks. Toward the west coast, Oregon Dunes National Park also has terrain set aside for sand rail recreation.
The arid desert terrain of Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico and Southern California are also favorite recreational areas for sand rail owners. Just outside of Las Vegas, Nevada, along the Interstate 15, tourists can rent sand rails and drive in a 15,000-acre desert playground. In Phoenix and Yuma, Arizona, sand rails are available for rent, and local parks are open to sand rail owners. Some of California's desert off-road parks are located near the Anza-Borrego Desert and Ocotillo. The desert continues into New Mexico and northward toward Colorado. Sand rail rental and off-road parks are located throughout the regions.
Above the plains of Kansas and Nebraska, arid, open land around Harrisburg and Sioux Falls, South Dakota, is popular with sand rail riders. RV parks, off-road rental companies and sand rail distributors are popular in this region. Sioux Falls features a number of ORV parks, and just to the west in the Badlands of South Dakota, visitors can rent and ride sand rails. Off-road sand rail tours can also be found in Utah.
