General Electric offers consumer appliances like refrigerators through its GE Appliances division. A side-by-side refrigerator has the freezer on the left side and the refrigerator section on the right. Many of these models come with water and ice dispensers. If your icemaker is leaking water, attempt to repair the problem yourself before contacting GE. This saves you money on repair fees.
If your GE refrigerator icemaker is leaking, see if there's ice caught in the chute. As the ice melts, water can slowly leak out. Remove any ice caught in the chute. Take out any irregularly shaped ice cubes in the bin, which can get caught in the chute. Use a carpenter's level and verify that your refrigerator and ice bin are level. Level the refrigerator using the adjustable feet on the unit. Take the ice bin out, and slide it back in to assure it's seated properly.
The defrost water drain can cause leaks in the icemaker if it is too full or if the drain itself is split. Empty out the drain if it is clogged with debris or if it is overflowing. Examine the drain. If it is cracked, get a new one since you normally can’t fix this part. Check the fittings, and make sure that they are tight. If not, tighten any loose connections. Replace any hoses that are cracked.
Water Valve/Fill Extension Tube
A defective water shutoff valve can cause your icemaker to fill up too fast with water. This causes the icemaker tray to overflow and leak water out of the dispenser. Try shutting off the valve. If it won’t shut off and is stuck, you need to replace it since it’s difficult to repair this component. If the valve does turn, turn it down to a lower setting, which decreases the water pressure. Examine the fill extension tube. If this tube is punctured or split, you need to replace it. Order replacement parts from a GE parts dealer.
See if you have a blockage of ice inside the fill tube. Ice caught in the tube causes the tube to fall out of the fitting, causing leaks. Clean out the tube, and lower the temperature setting inside freezer. This prevents water in the tube from freezing. Examine the icemaker ice mold and tray. See if any of these components are broken or cracked. If they are, you need to replace these parts since it’s difficult to repair them.
