UPS is a package delivery service that delivers packages all over the United States and in other countries. The delivery driver's job is to ensure packages are delivered on time and securely to businesses and residences in a professional manner.

Delivery Driver

Being a delivery driver for UPS is a physically demanding position. It is a fast-paced, outdoor position that involves continual lifting, lowering and carrying of packages. Most packages weigh between 25 and 35 pounds but can weigh up to 70 pounds. A package delivery driver must have excellent customer service skills and excellent driving skills. Drivers must be able to drive a standard, manual transmission truck. UPS drivers work primarily on weekdays and usually have weekends and holidays off.

Road Driver and City Driver

Road drivers and city drivers are responsible for the delivery of freight to two or more service centers, and daily pickup and delivery of freight from numerous commercial and residential customers. At the end of the day, they return to the original hub. All drivers must have a valid, unrestricted Commercial Driver's License with haz-mat and twin-trailer endorsements.

Flatbed and Dry Van Drivers

Both flatbed and dry van driving positions require a haz-mat license and experience driving a tractor-trailer. Drivers in these positions use a tractor-trailer for the over-the-road delivery of freight to two or more locations for one dedicated customer. The customer may have several buildings and businesses, so drivers may be required to be on the road for up to five days at a time.

Requirements

To be considered for employment with UPS, road drivers and city drivers must be at least 21. Flatbed and dry van drivers must be at least 23 1/2. Drivers must be able to read, write and speak English. All drivers are required to meet the Department of Transportation and UPS mental and physical requirements. Drivers must submit to and pass a drug test and background check. Once hired, drivers must pass a DOT physical examination and successfully pass a UPS freight road test. Drivers also must comply with UPS appearance standards; flatbed and dry van drivers may be required to conform to their assigned companies' appearance standards as well.
