Certain signs can suggest that a dog is ready to deliver puppies.

Dogs typically carry their puppies for 63 days, although smaller breeds can deliver earlier and larger breeds can deliver later. Counting 63 days from the time of breeding can give an owner some idea of when a dog will go into labor. There are a number of additional ways to tell when a dog is nearing labor, which can enable an owner to be present in case there are complications.

  1. Drop In Temperature

    • Dogs undergo a sudden drop in temperature 24 hours before they go into labor. A dog's normal temperature is between 100.5 and 102.5, the average being 101.5. About two weeks before your dog's estimated due date, take her temperature twice each day. A sudden drop to a temperature below 100 is a strong indication that your dog will go into labor within 24 hours.

    Rejection of Food

    • Pregnant dogs will often stop eating just before going into labor. They may also vomit what they have previously eaten. This behavior ensures that the dog's stomach is empty in preparation for labor. The dog should begin eating and drinking again after the birth process.

    Nesting Behavior

    • Dogs typically exhibit a heightened nesting instinct as their labor nears. Just before labor, a dog may be observed frequently going in and out of her bed or nest area. She may repeatedly circle the area before lying down and may paw at the bedding as if to arrange or soften it.

    Changes in Normal Behavior

    • Just before labor, a dog may become very restless and may pace and exhibit heavy panting. Sometimes dogs become highly reactive to potential threats as they near labor and may bark at things or people normally not bothersome to them. Some dogs become very needy before labor, seeking the company of a trusted human and following that person around closely.
