Bookkeeping Systems Similar to Quickbooks
QuickBooks, released in 1998, is an easy-to-use accounting software package for small business owners. It stemmed from the Quicken software sold for personal financial management. It contains an order processing module, inventory tracking and processing module, purchasing and receiving module, accounts payable and receivables and general ledger tracking. According to Tech Media's Top 10 Reviews, Sage Peachtree, QuickBooks, AccountEdge, Bookkeeper, and DacEasy are the top five small-business accounting software packages on the market.
-
Sage Peachtree
-
Though it is a little cumbersome to set up, the overall use is rated very easy compared to Quicken's excellent ease-of-use rating. It contains all of the same features as QuickBooks, with a few extras. The Peachtree package allows voiding existing checks; it can handle "Last In, First Out" (LIFO) and "First In, First Out" (FIFO) cost methods; allows the option of cash or accrual accounting and allows scheduling of report printing, all of which are lacking in the QuickBooks application. Unlike QuickBooks, this package does not offer reporting for fixed assets and contains far fewer financial statement reporting options.
AccountEdge
-
AccountEdge, rated in third place of the top five applications, is also easy to use. It lacks Peachtree's and QuickBooks' ability to estimate shipping costs, track shipments and access remotely. In addition, can't create drop shipments, nor does it have the feature to print postage from within the software. However, unlike QuickBooks, it can void existing checks and allows a choice between cash or accrual accounting as well as the ability to enter stocking location codes.

Bookkeeper
-
Bookkeeper has excellent general ledger, accounts payable, payroll and banking features. Though it has the ability to estimate shipping costs like QuickBooks and Peachtree, it doesn't print shipping labels or allow tracking of shipments. It also lacks some of the electronic services available with QuickBooks, such as direct deposits and electronic payment services. This software allows you to add images of inventory items, to choose between cash and accrual accounting and void checks, which are features not available with QuickBooks.
DacEasy
-
DacEasy does not have the job costing and financial statement functions available in the top four software applications, though it includes features such as voiding existing checks and adding inventory images not available in QuickBooks. DacEasy works well for general use by small business for order processing, inventory tracking and accounting, but it is lacking in the payroll and time tracking features offered by its top competitors.
