What Type of Rum to Use in Hurricane Mix? thumbnail
Don't wait for Mardi Gras to have a Hurricane cocktail. This cocktail can be personalized with different flavors -- make it your own.

The Hurricane cocktail was created in the French Quarter in New Orleans. It received its name from the classic "hurricane" glass it is typically served in. This drink is very fruity with a rum base. This is an ideal drink to serve at your next Mardi Gras party or just for a summer barbecue. There are many variations of the Hurricane mix; you can use different types of syrups and alcohol to achieve different flavors. However, almost all Hurricane mixes call for the use of both dark and white rums. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Basic Hurricane Recipe

    • The most common recipe for the Hurricane includes two different types of rum: one part dark rum mixed with one part white rum. Passion fruit syrup and lime juice are then added and mixed together. Pour the drink over ice and you have a classic Hurricane.

    Jazzed Up Hurricane Cocktail

    • If you are looking for a cocktail that isn't as sweet, add another type of rum to the mix. Start the drink with 1 oz. Jamaican dark rum, 1 oz. dark rum and 1 oz. white rum. Mix the rums with 3 oz. of orange juice and pineapple juice. Top it off with a little sweetness -- about ½ oz. of grenadine syrup -- and shake. Pour the mixture over crushed ice. This drink is very strong; it is recommended that you sip it through a straw.

    Hurricane Leah

    • The Hurricane Leah is an ideal option if you aren't a rum fan. Use ¼ oz. each of light rum, gin, vodka, tequila and Blue Curacao. Add a tiny splash of cherry brandy and about 3 oz. of sweet and sour mix. Toss all of this with 3 oz. of orange juice.

    Food Ideas

    • These sweet fruity based cocktails are best served with salty snacks instead of sweet snacks. You can serve Hurricanes with nuts, pretzels or salty, smoky cheeses. Balance out the flavors as much as possible. Keep the theme of New Orleans and serve up some Cajun food to go along with your drinks, like spicy Andouille sausage gumbo.
