Flonase, or fluticasone nasal spray, is used to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergies such as sneezing and stuffy, runny or itchy nose and eyes. It prevents and decreases inflammation in the nose to ease pain and stuffiness. Possible side effects of using Flonase, such as slowing growth in children, nosebleed, dizziness, diarrhea, vision problems and muscle weakness, may lead you to seek an alternative medication.
Nasonex, or mometasone nasal inhalation, is another treatment for seasonal allergies. Like Flonase, it also works by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages. You can use Nasonex to prevent seasonal allergy symptoms by beginning use two to four weeks before the beginning of pollen season. Its possible side effects are headache, vomiting, sore throat and cough.
Omnaris, or ciclesonide nasal spray, is used to treat the symptoms of seasonal allergic reactions as well. This spray also works by preventing and decreasing inflammation in the nose. The full effects of this medication are not felt until at least 24 to 48 hours after your first dose. Omnaris' possible side effects are headache, nosebleed, burning or irritation of the nose and earache.
Veramyst, or fluticasone nasal spray, is another treatment for allergy symptoms that works by preventing and decreasing inflammation in the nose. Like Flonase, Veramyst contains fluticasone, but it is bonded with furoate, while Flonase's fluticasone is bonded with propionate. This small change makes a big difference. Unlike Flonase, Veramyst improves eye allergy symptoms, like redness and itching. It is also approved for use by children as young as two years old. Flonase is approved for children age four and older.
Symptoms will begin to improve within 12 hours of your first use of Veramyst, but you will have to wait several days to feel the full benefits. Potential side effects of this medication include headache, nosebleed, cough and stomach pain. You should avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medication.
Rhinocort, or budesonide, is another nasal spray used to treat symptoms cause by allergies. This medication also works to decrease and prevent inflammation in the nose, making it easier to breathe. Dry mouth, cough and lightheadedness are among the side effects of this medication.
