The word "pedagogy" emerged from the Greek word, "paidagogos," which means a "teacher of children." However, pedagogy encompasses more than standing in front of a classroom or lecture hall and expounding the foundational principles of a subject. It engages both teacher and student on many levels.
The Virginia Tech Center for Instructional Development and Educational Research has, in part, defined pedagogy as the environments that educators create that will encourage learning. True pedagogy draws students out and offers them the time to explore a subject's concepts in more depth. Educators impart knowledge about their chosen discipline, while bringing together the social aspects of the classroom and cognitive development. Ideally, it should acknowledge a student's stage of learning, impart instruction that uses all the senses and be systematic in its approach.
