Engineers use science and math to solve technical problems and turn scientific findings into innovative commercial products. Many engineers focus on such fields as aerospace, biomedicine and computer hardware. An engineer with an impressive employment history can use a combined format resume using a professional experience section as well as a professional profile section to highlight specialized skills as well as experience.
Use Business Style
Use letter-size paper of 8 1/2 by 11 inches, and allow for 1-inch margins all around. Select a clear, conventional font such as Arial or Times New Roman in 10- or 11-point size, and use black ink. Place your personal contact information at the top of your resume. Include your address, telephone number, cell phone number and email address. The resume format must be consistent throughout. If you list your first engineering job title in bold font in 11 point Arial, all job titles should be in bold 11 point Arial. The same holds true for indentations, spacing and italicizing.
Your engineering job objective comes next. Grab the attention of the hiring manager by explaining what type of engineering position you are looking for and what skills you will bring to the position. For example, you might say that you are an aerospace engineer looking for a design and testing position where you can use your skills and experience in aerodynamics and propulsion. Think in terms of what you can do for the employer, not the other way around.
Professional Engineering Experience
If you are an engineer with experience, a combined format resume can present the details of your previous positions as well as your skills and abilities in a succinct way. Begin with a "Professional Experience" section and use reverse chronological order by listing your last or present position first. List either your position or the name and location of the company first, and then highlight some major accomplishments or duties. For example, you may have been a Biomedical Engineer with XYZ Company in Toledo, Ohio, where you designed imaging systems and conducted training.
Engineers who possess specialized skills, abilities and accomplishments may want to showcase them in a "Professional Profile" section.Use bullet points to present the most information in the space available. Think about the position you are applying for and what qualities the ideal candidate for that position would have. Then tailor your own attributes to show the employer what you can bring to the company. If the engineering position is to supervise a construction site, mention any skills, abilities and accomplishments you have relating to such areas as design, construction, costs and supervisory duties.
