People have been eating hard-boiled eggs since ancient times, when the eggs of just about any kind of bird were enjoyed. Over the years, the word, "egg," in the context of food, has become synonymous with chicken eggs, a protein-packed food that pairs well with other snacks.
Hard-boiled eggs add protein to a crudité platter, either whole, quartered or chopped and added to a dip or stuffing for celery or cherry tomatoes. To make a deviled egg dip, dice peeled, hard-boiled eggs and mix with 1 tsp. mayonnaise, 1/2 tsp. prepared mustard and 1/2 tsp. vinegar per egg and season with salt, pepper and paprika. Or, make chunky ranch dip to serve with raw veggies by stirring chopped, hard-boiled egg into prepared ranch dressing.
Toast is the classic accompaniment to eggs in any form and it goes well with hard-boiled eggs as a snack, too. Slice hard-boiled eggs and serve them over buttered toast or a slice of crusty bread. Add a slice of tomato, cheese or deli turkey if you like. Those who avoid carbohydrates or can't eat gluten can substitute a whole romaine lettuce leaf for the bread -- roll the sliced egg and any other ingredients in the lettuce like a burrito.
Smoked salmon and its brinier cousin, cured lox, pair well with hard-boiled eggs. To assemble a salmon platter, place sliced or chopped hard-boiled eggs in the center of a plate and surround with smoked salmon or lox, sliced onion, sliced tomato and capers. Serve the platter alone or with cream cheese and bagels, or bread.
Caviar and eggs may not be an everyday snack for most, but for special occasions it's an indulgent mini-feast. Some consider caviar an aphrodisiac, making it a good choice to pair with hard-boiled eggs for Valentine's Day, anniversaries and romantic weekends. Use caviar as a garnish on top of deviled eggs, or as an ingredient in the filling. Or, peel and cut the hard-boiled eggs in half and spoon a dollop of caviar on each half.
