Why Is There No Sound on YouTube?
YouTube is a free online video library that allows you to upload and share videos -- and watch videos other people and companies have uploaded to the site. Unless a video intentionally lacks audio, sound is an integral part of the YouTube viewing experience. If your YouTube video is silent -- and it shouldn't be -- the problem could have one of several causes.
-
Computer Volume Off
-
YouTube lacking sound may be symptomatic of a much broader condition -- that the sound has been turned down or muted for your entire computer. If you use speakers and don't have them plugged in or powered on, for example, you won't hear sound coming from YouTube or any other source. Even if you use headphones, which don't require speaker power being "On" to use them, they will still lack sound if a red circle with a line through it appears over the "Speaker" icon on the right end of the Windows Task Bar. That means your computer's sound has been muted.
YouTube Volume Off
-
If the sound is fine when using other applications and visiting other websites on your computer but you can't hear sound on YouTube, it's possible you or someone has muted the application that plays back YouTube video on your computer. To check this, play a YouTube video and click the "Speaker" icon in the bottom left corner of the video. If the bar is slid all the way down -- and particularly if an "x" appears over the top of the volume gauge -- you have turned down the volume or muted your videos. Slide the bar up to turn up the volume.
-
Video Upload Error
-
If you have problems hearing sound on one video, attempt to view different one. It's possible that for several reasons, be they user error or a problem with the YouTube uploading process, the video has never had sound as long as it's been on YouTube. Peruse the "Comments" section of the video in question to see if other viewers have previously complained about audio problems with the video. Contact the user directly and inform him of the problem if you believe he intended the video to have sound.
Sound Card Issues
-
Sound on your computer is a result not only of your speakers or headphones, but also of an internal component of your computer known as its "sound card." If your sound card is malfunctioning, you'll not only be unable to hear sound on YouTube, but on everything you do with the computer. If you troubleshoot your speakers or other audio output devices and still hear no sound, it's likely your sound card is malfunctioning -- or entirely non-functioning.
