According to the History Channel website, Mardi Gras was introduced to America by the French explorers Pierre Le Moyne d'Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville when they landed near New Orleans on March 3, 1699. The holiday encompasses both Christian and pagan influences and is awash in symbolism, from the shapes and colors of masks to the traditional krewes and king cakes. Additionally, according to NOLAimports.com, the colors of Mardi Gras -- purple, green and gold -- were selected by Rex, the King of Carnival, in 1872 in the "Symbolism of Colors" parade and represent justice, faith and power, respectively.
