Differences Between Wine Glasses & Dessert Glasses

Differences Between Wine Glasses & Dessert Glasses thumbnail
Wine glasses optimize the shape of the bowl for oxygenating wine.

Tempting and delicious desserts and wines are served in a variety of glasses. Each type of glass has a particular use. They are specifically designed for one type of wine, champagne or a particular type of dessert, such as tiramisu or ice-cream. The smallest glass is the dessert-wine glass reserved for liquid desserts, such as limoncello and port. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Shape

    • The shape of wine glasses and dessert glasses differ. Wine glasses, whether for a burgundy or a pinot grigio, have three components: the base, stem and bowl. The stem of a wine glass is long enough to be grasped to prevent heating the wine with the hand. Dessert glasses have shorter stems.

    Width of the Bowl

    • Bowls for wine glasses are shaped depending on the wine being served in them. The most notable feature of all wine glasses is that the top of the bowl is always more narrow than the widest part of the bowl. Exposing the wine to air is an important element and bowl shapes determine the quantity of oxygen. Dessert glasses are the opposite. The top of the bowl is always equal to the widest part if not wider. Typical wide bowls are for ice-cream making it easy to scoop out the dessert.

    Thickness

    • Wine glasses are usually made thinner than dessert glasses. The type of crystal used can make it seem as if the wine glass is heavier. The thickest part of the wine glass is the stem, the thinnest is the top of the bowl to facilitate drinking. Dessert glasses tend to have thicker bowls since the main use is to contain a dessert that will be consumed with a spoon or fork.

    Purpose

    • The main purpose of wine glasses is to serve, contain and oxygenate wine to give it the maximum taste and aroma to the guest. Dessert glasses are not suited to oxygenate wines and the thick lip at the top of the bowl is not meant for drinking. However, wine glasses can be used to serve some desserts. They are useful for individual servings for fruit, ice cream and tiramisu.
