Ideas for Decorating a Paper Mache Mask
A paper mache mask is made from paper and paste and molded over a frame, such as chicken wire. Like any other type of mask, the paper mache mask covers either the entire face, or only a portion of it, depending on the maker's preference. Made for wear or display, paper mache mask decoration is limited only by your imagination.

Paint
-
If you want to use only paint in your decoration, work out your design on paper first. While paper mache is easily painted, too many layers of paint may cause the mask to lose its shape. In addition, ensure that you paint with acrylic paints, as oil-based paints may take several days to finish drying. For intricate designs, such as a stained glass face mask, mark off your painting areas on the mask with pencil after you have worked out the details of the decoration on paper. This way you will ensure that you have included all of the features on the mask that you desire before you pick up your brush. If you are painting your mask and using other decoration, apply your paint as evenly as possible and allow it to dry completely before adding embellishments.
Jewels
-
Jewels on a mask give it sparkle and draw attention to it easily. Be careful in applying too many jewels, however, if you intend to wear the mask, as the jewels may make the mask very heavy. You can purchase fake jewels at most craft stores in both large and small sizes and apply them with a clear-drying craft glue once you have determined where to place them on the mask. Jewels are appropriate for a mask that demonstrates royalty, such as a queen or princess, as well as for a fine lady at Mardi Gras.

Feathers
-
Many individuals that make paper mache masks include feathers in their designs. Feathers are normally placed around the top of the mask or are extended out from one side to look like a headdress or feathered hat. Any type of feathers are suitable, depending on the effect that you want to create in your decoration. Try making a headband on the mask across the forehead with jewels, for example, then attach feathers all across the top edge of the mask so that the feathers stand up above the mask to create the look of a showgirl.
Glitter
-
If you really want to stand out, try designing a mask with glitter. Glitter comes in a variety of colors and is available at craft or department stores. Paint your mask as desired first and allow it to dry. Then section off the parts of the mask where you want glitter with painter's tape. Painter's tape is blue and will only temporarily adhere to the mask and will not lift off the paint when removed. Brush on a thin layer of clear-drying craft glue inside the sectioned-off areas of the mask, then sprinkle on the glitter. Once the glitter begins to set, but is not completely dry, remove the painter's tape carefully, then allow the glitter and glue to thoroughly dry.
