IT Security Auditor Job Description & Responsibilities

  • An IT Security Auditor tests the effectiveness of computer systems and their information security components, he provides detailed reports on the findings to his client or employer, and he issues recommendations on best practices to improve the security levels of the system in place. The main goal of an IT security auditor is to determine whether a computer system is safe enough to protect a company's assets and data integrity while allowing for the organizational goals to be attained through efficient use of IT resources. IT security auditors usually work in cooperation with others groups of an organization to ensure the security of all IT systems.


  • Most jobs postings for IT security auditors ask that candidates hold, at minimum, a bachelor's degree in computer science or information technology combined with specific IT security certification. The certification program is recognized worldwide and requires the completion of a standardized security auditing course that leads to the certification.


  • IT security auditors are responsible for the verification of the effectiveness of their organization's security controls. They look out for mismanagement, waste or fraud by inspecting and evaluating their organization's financial and information systems, management procedures and security controls. An IT auditor can be asked to review company operation processes, evaluating their efficiency, effectiveness and compliance with corporate security policies and related government regulations. Once the audit is completed, he proposes recommendations to improve the organization's computer systems to make them more effective. Depending on the level of security auditing needed, the duties and responsibilities change. Some IT auditors perform their duties as external consultants while others are full-time staff members of an organization.
