ATV is a catchall acronym that stands for all terrain vehicle. It refers to many types of vehicles that are not designed for on-road use. ATVs are intended for use over rough terrain. While many ATVs are used purely for recreational purposes, some are manufactured specifically to be work vehicles. The John Deere AMT 622 is such a utilitarian vehicle.

History

The John Deere AMT 622 is a utility vehicle produced in the late 1980s and early 1990s. AMT stands for all material transporter and the vehicle was designed for yard, farm and golf course work. It ended production in 1992 with the introduction of the John Deere Gator utility vehicle. At the time of publication, a used John Deere AMT 622 can be purchased for under $1000.

Body

The John Deere AMT 622 has a single wheel in the front of the vehicle. This wheel, when turned by the standard style steering wheel, allows the vehicle to turn. Two models of the 622 are availabe, one with two rear drive wheels on a single axle and another with four rear drive wheels on two axles. Two molded plastic seats allow the driver and a passenger to ride. The 622 has a hydraulic dumpbox for hauling.

Engine and Transmission

The AMT 622 is powered by a gasoline engine built by the Kawasaki Motor Corporation. The engine generates 10 horsepower and provides a top speed of 20 miles per hour. The engine is an overhead-valve engine, which provides better wear and improved fuel economy. The transmission is a continuously variable transmission; a belt driven automatic that has fewer parts, is more reliable and gives better fuel economy over conventional transmissions.

Capacity

The AMT 622 has a dumpbox for hauling material. The box is 48 inches long, 43 inches wide and has 11 inch tall walls. The front of the box is lifted hydraulically to allow materials to dump out the back of the box. A rear tailgate must be opened to allow dumping. The load capacity of the vehicle is 1000 pounds.
