Difference Between a Queen and a Queen Split Mattress

Save

A queen split mattress, also known as a dual queen, consists of two mattress components, each 30 inches wide by 80 inches long, placed side by side in a bed frame. This makes a mattress surface that is 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, the same size as a queen mattress. Having two mattresses in one bed is a flexible arrangement that has certain advantages, especially for couples with differing sleep requirements.

Split Queen Advantages

Easy moving and delivery: If your home has narrow doors, stairways, halls or other restricted passageways, it is easier to move in with a split queen mattress set. The set can be separated into the component pieces, carried into the bedroom, and assembled in place.

Partner preferences: Having two mattresses within the bed frame can provide more comfortable sleep for a couple, especially when one person is heavier than the other, or when they have differing needs for mattress composition. For example, one partner may need the support of an extra-firm mattress, while the other prefers a softer mattress with more cushioning. The two mattresses of a split queen can be ordered to accommodate the preferences of both partners.

Adjustable bed support: An adjustable bed has a built-in mechanism that allows you to raise and lower the head or foot the bed. When this feature is used in a bed shared by a couple, the split queen mattress is essential so that the halves of the bed can be adjusted separately. This allows one person to elevate the foot of the bed, for example, while the other can sleep in a flat position or raise the head of her side to read or relax.

Split Queen Bedding

When fully assembled, a split queen bed is the same size as a queen, so ordinary queen-size bedding will fit it. However, if your split queen bed is adjustable, you will need a separate mattress pad and fitted sheet for each mattress to allow each side to be adjusted independently. Adjustable bed sheet sets typically provide two fitted bottom sheets, one flat sheet and two pillowcases.
