How to Convert My Logo to Vector

By Louise Balle

A vector image is a series of points, lines, objects, and curves that make up the outline of an image. One of the main benefits of a vector graphic is that you can scale it (make it smaller or larger) without degrading the quality. If you want to convert your logo into a vector graphic, you have a few different options to choose from.

Step 1

Scan you image to get it into a standard JPG file format.

Step 2

Use Photoshop's "Magic Wand" or "Pen" tool to create a path around the logo. Click "Make Work Path from Selection" from the "Path" toolbar when you're finished. Export the path ("File," "Export," then "Paths") and save the new vector file with a new name. You should only attempt this option if you are very familiar with Adobe Photoshop because it takes some time to draw a precise path around the entire logo image with your pen tool.

Step 3

Use Adobe Illustrator (CS2 or later) to make the logo a vector image. Import the logo into the program and make sure it is selected. Click the "Live Trace" button on the "Object" menu in Illustrator, which will rasterize the logo image and convert it to vector format.

Step 4

Upload the logo file to an online vector converter (see "Resources" for an example of a service). This is the ideal choice for a beginner who needs a quick, simple method for converting the logo to a vector image. You may have to pay a fee for the service.
