Give the loved one whose birthday you are celebrating a good laugh with an "older than dirt" birthday cake. Such cakes are made as jokes for those celebrating birthdays after turning 30. Make birthday cakes featuring "hills" as the person is now "over the hill" or create cakes featuring tombstones and the Grim Reaper.
Make a Grim Reaper cake with a sheet cake. Frost the cake entirely with white frosting with black frosting to decorate the edges. Pile green frosting on one corner of the cake as grass and place a black tombstone candle on top. Find candles with "Over the Hill," "Too Old to Count" or similar sayings. Use black frosting in the center of the cake to create a Grim Reaper image paired with the words "Relax, I'm Just Here for the Cake." Write "Happy Birthday" in black frosting next to the Grim Reaper image to complete the cake.
Round the top edges of a 13-by-9-inch cake to create a tombstone shape. Cover the entire cake in gray fondant and use green-colored coconut at the bottom as grass. Tie a few silk flowers together and place in the middle of the "grass." Write a phrase in black gel icing on the top of the cake, such as "Here Lies [Name's] Youth. 1961-2011. Happy 50th."
Use a sheet cake for this design or put together two different-flavored 13-by-9-inch cakes. Frost the entire cake, except for the edges, in white frosting. Paint yellow frosting around the cake's edges and use black gel frosting to create a "Caution" tape stripe design. Write "Caution: Old Zone." Create 4-inch "street signs" on top of the cake that read "Danger: Falling Body Parts" and traffic lights that say "Stop. Nap. Shuffle." Use icing or fondant to make these images. Write "Happy [Age] Birthday" in icing the top left corner of the cake.
Make an "older than dirt" cake in the shape of a hill as the person is now "over the hill." Bake vanilla sponge cake in a Pyrex bowl to create the hill shape. Grease the entire cake in butter and flour after baking and cooling the cake to prevent it from falling apart due to its odd shape. Frost the whole cake in green buttercream icing to represent "grass" and use fondant to spell out "Older than Dirt."
