A hairdresser provides an array of hair care services ranging from basic washing and cutting to styling. She also advises clients on self-care between visits. Along with technical competencies in hair services, a good hairdresser needs a mix of personal qualities to offer excellent service and distinctive looks.
Creativity and Vision
Creativity and vision separate a good hairdresser from someone who simply cuts hair for a living. A hairdresser takes someone with a basic head of hair, develops a vision, and uses equipment and tools to bring the vision to life in a beautiful hairstyle. Often, clients ask for a particular look or style. As the hairdresser, you need to understand whether that style works given the customer's look and hair. If not, you need the confidence in your creativity to suggest a close alternative.
Good Listening and Service Mentality
Good hairdressers are skilled at interacting with people. A client may sit in your chair for several hours on each visit, so you must be a good listener to earn the client's trust and loyalty. First, you need to listen carefully to understand the client's concerns and the particular look she wants. Then, during the actual hair care and styling process, you must ask questions and invite the client to share what's going on in her life, and how that might impact her look. Making clients comfortable in the chair is important to customer retention and positive word of mouth.
Physical Stamina and Dexterity
Hairdressers need a few important physical traits. Because you can spend eight hours or more on your feet, you need stamina and endurance. Also, hairdressers use their hands throughout the day to operate equipment, wash and cut hair, and style. Therefore, you need dexterity in your hands and fingers to manipulate tools and hair products every day. You may also have to move chairs and equipment at times, which requires strength.
Color Mixing Artistry
Good hairdressers have the versatility to provide an array of hair color dyes and treatments. Clients pay you for coloring and styling service because they expect more than they get from a less expensive over-the-counter color treatment. You must understand how to mix colors to create specific shades of warm and dark colors. Good hairdressers apply color paints with pinpoint brush control and artistic flair to create seamless transitions between different tones and contrasting hues.
