As of 2009, a valet parking attendant's average pay was $9.90 an hour, and his average yearly income was $20,600, according to the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Valet parking attendants' pay, however, ranged as high as $28,020 a year; the median income was $19,200 a year, the bureau reports.

In 2009, Vermont was the highest-paying state for this occupation, where valet attendant income averaged $26,240 a year. Washington and Montana followed, where in both states pay averaged close to $24,000 a year. Rounding out the list were Alaska and Massachusetts, where average salaries were $22,450 and $22,360 a year, respectively. The District of Columbia employed the most valet parking attendants per capita compared to the 50 states. In the District of Columbia, 2,290 parking attendants averaged $21,380 a year. The highest paying metropolitan area was Danbury, Connecticut, where the average parking valet income was $28,410, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Warehousing and storage was the highest-paying industry for this field in 2009, employing 90 valet parking attendants at an average $27,320 a year. State governments and social advocacy organizations followed; 109 valet attendants averaged $26,710 a year working for state governments and the 70 valet attendants working for social advocacy organizations averaged $24,700. Rounding out the list were specialty hospitals and physicians' offices; specialty hospitals employed 70 valet attendants, who earned $24,110 a year on average, and physicians' offices employed 60 attendants, whose salaries averaged $24,010. The personal services industry employed the most valet parking attendants: 74,090. Salaries in this sector averaged $20,070 a year, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports.

Other factors that can affect a valet parking attendant's earnings are appearance, demeanor and professionalism. Because valets often collect tips from patrons, those who have a clean-cut appearance, a friendly manner and conduct themselves courteously are more likely to receive higher tips.
