Science Discoveries of the 70s
There are many scientific discoveries that occur each year, including throughout the 1970s. One example is the introduction of bar codes on products in England. These discoveries included various inventions as well as advances in different fields. While some of these advances furthered practical fields such as medicine, others were used more for entertaining purposes.

Origin of the Universe
-
In 1970, Stephen Hawking produced evidence that the universe had to have a beginning and was not infinite. This was based on nothing more than Einstein's Theory of Relativity. Previously, a scientist named Penrose showed that black holes cause points where certain physical quantities attain infinite values. This research showed that this event, called a singularity, was more common than previous believed.
LCD

The liquid crystal display was invented in Switzerland in the year 1970 by Hoffmann-La Roche. He filed for the patent in December of that year with two other co-inventors. He sold the invention's design to a firm who used the technology in wrist watches for the rest of the decade. The Japanese also used the design, though they used the invention for similar purposed and produced new innovations in digital watches.

Floppy Disk
-
The floppy disk was introduced by IBM in 1971. These disks used a round magnetic ribbon to store data within a plastic casing. These disks were also called "diskettes" to make them sound similar to cassettes. These disks would later be used not only on computers, but also gaming consoles and electric pianos. The first read-write floppy disk drive was released in 1972 and was called the Memorex 650.
VCR
-
In 1970 Sony developed the first home video system. This was not the first VCR to exist, simply the first to be produced for home consumer use. Philips, however, would eventually produce the version of the VCR that became most popular as time went on. Sony's format, Betamax, while of a higher quality than VHS, was not commercially successful enough to continue production for very long.
