Changing your hair color can instantly update your look. Highlights and low lights add depth to hair color so that it doesn't look flat. Highlights lighten the hair in small strips. Lowlights darken the hair much the same way. Pairing highlights with low lights is quite common. If you can't afford a trip to the salon, apply at-home low lights yourself. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Shades

    • When doing at-home low lights, stick with copper or gold-toned brown shades. It's most flattering for fair skin and also works for medium to dark skin. If the low lights are too dark, they can overwhelm and wash out pale skin. For a natural look, stick with low lights that are within two tones of your hair color. If you choose a color that is darker than that, the look will be dramatic and less natural.

    Frequency

    • Add low lights to the hair less frequently than you do highlights. You will have to do highlights more often as your roots grow in. Only add low light to the hair every third time that you get highlights done. This will make them blend in better with the highlights. They do not need to be done as often as they should not fade too much.

    Application

    • It can be tricky to apply low lights to your own hair. Make sure that you have a mirror and a comfortable seat so that you can see what you are doing towards the bottom and back of the head. Start by cutting salon foils into two-inch strips. That is what is used in salons to highlight and low light hair. Place a piece of foil directly under the section you are going to color. Paint the color on from the roots to the tips. Start by coloring the bottom layer of hair. Work your way upwards in layers until you reach the top layer.

    Tips

    • When doing both high and low lights, make sure to alternate them in your hair so that it blends well. One problem that you may encounter when doing at-home low lights is that they will look like stripes. Alternating them prevents that from happening. To keep low lights from fading, use a shampoo and conditioner indicated for use on color-treated hair.
