Monsters make for a spooktacular treat for Halloween, birthdays or even just for fun. Simply bake cookies, then decorate them with icing and other treats to give the sweets festive monster faces. Whether your monster faces are goofy or spooky is entirely up to you. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Monsters

    • With so many monsters to choose from, it can be difficult to decide how to decorate a monster face cookie. A fuzzy-looking, Muppet-like monster will please young children and older ones alike. For a cookie design that is out of this world, make some alien monsters, with various number of eyes and crazy colors. Other spooky monsters, from mummies to Frankenstein, will also look great. Or, instead of picking one type of monster, try making a variety of different ones.

    Cookie Type

    • While any type of cookie can be transformed into a monster face with a thick layer of frosting and some candy, cookies with smooth textures are often easiest to decorate. Sugar cookies offer a smooth surface and a sweet but simple taste that is sure to taste great with whatever you use to decorate it. For a cookie with more flavor, try gingerbread cookies. Better yet, capture a taste of autumn with a pumpkin cookie.

    Icing

    • Rather than sticking to white vanilla frosting or brown chocolate frosting, liven up your cookies with exciting colors. Along with using energetic shades, try applying the frosting in different techniques. After smoothing on a layer of frosting for the base, turn the cookie into an alien monster; pipe on an eye (or two or three), as well as a goofy smile. For a wild, hairy monster, pipe out lines of icing to create a fur-like appearance.

    Decorations

    • Other items, such as sprinkles and candy, provide an alternative way to add a final decorative touch to the monster face cookies. Rather than using icing to draw in eyes, cut a marshmallow in half to create big, frightened eyes. Place black jelly beans, dark M&MS or other round candies on top to create the pupils. A dash of sprinkles gives the cookies a unique texture. For instance, top off a furry monster with some colored sprinkles, giving it an even fuzzier look.
