Children may grasp concepts better through hands-on activities.

The Bible story of Noah's ark is from the Old Testament. It tells the story of Noah, whom God told to build a large boat to save himself and the animals from the flooding rains He was sending. This is an engaging story to tell to children as there are all sorts of activities that can go along with it. Help kindergarten-age children understand how God protected His chosen people from the flood.

  1. Coffee Filter Rainbow

    • God sent a rainbow after the flood was over to show Noah that he would never destroy the earth by a flood again. Help your children make rainbows of their own to hang in their window at home. Cut a white coffee filter in half so you have two half-circles; give each child one half. Let the children color the colors of the rainbow on the coffee filter with marker. Instruct them to leave white space between the lines. Once finished, spray the colored filters with a spray bottle filled with water. The colors will run into each other, making a vibrant, water-colored effect on the filter. Lay them on a paper towel to dry completely.

    Match the Animals

    • The animals boarded the ark in pairs, a male and female, so they could reproduce after the flood. Play an animal-matching game with the children. Draw or find pictures of many different animals; make sure you have two of each one. Turn them all upside down on the table and have the children take turns finding matches. The person with the most matches at the end of the game wins. This game can be played over and over with the same cards; simply mix them up before laying them down again.

    Fill the Boat

    • The animals all made it on the ark before the rain started. Cut out a large boat from brown cardboard or sheets of paper and tape it to the wall. Make sure to include a few window cutouts, as well as a door. Cut out animals from magazines or draw them yourself. Have the children glue or tape the animals on the boat. You could also include pictures of Noah and his family to place on the boat. While the children work on filling the ark, talk about what life may have been like on the boat, taking care of the animals every day, cooking food and the desire to see dry land.

    Three-Legged Race

    • Children in kindergarten can get antsy sitting in a classroom all day. Help them expend some energy by leading them in a two-legged race. The animals must have been in a hurry to get on the boat before the rain came. They stuck to their partner so as not to get separated. Pair up the children and tie their legs together to prepare for the race. Have each pair choose the animal that they would like to be; while they race, they must make the noise that animal makes. Choose the start and finish lines and instruct the children to race to the ark.
