What Are Clipboards?
Clipboards are tools that hold papers or important documents in place with a metal clip. Clipboards provide a sturdy writing surface during times when a desk or flat surface is not available, such as on the football field or during workshops and seminars. Clipboards also help keep papers organized.

Clipboards can be made of aluminum, archboard, wood or plastic. They contain a clip at the top. The clip is often spring-loaded to hold papers in place and to prevent the papers falling to the floor or blowing away in the wind. The clip is permanently attached to the base of the clipboard. Users press the clip down or lift the clip to remove papers from the grip.
Professional Uses
-
Businesspeople, teachers, coaches and hospital staff often use clipboards to organize their paper items and forms. Businesspeople may use the tool to take notes during a meeting, evaluate a presentation or in the field to keep their documents organized and in one place. Teachers can also use of clipboards for sign-up sheets, student assessment, lunch count and attendance. Coaches often keep their athletic plays on clipboards; hospital staff members may use the tool to hold patient information.

Styles of Clipboards
-
Clipboards come in many styles. The most traditional style of clipboard is a flat wooden surface with a common metal clip. The clip usually has a hole in its top so users can hang the clipboard. Other styles are plastic or aluminum and open at either the top (near the clip), the side or the bottom for additional document and writing utensil storage. Clipboards may be purchased in a landscape or letter orientation, and legal, letter or memo sizes.
Custom Designs
-
Many printing companies offer individualized styles. For example, some companies sell clipboards that can be customized with a football field image with a specific coach's name printed on the board section. Company logos may be added as well as pen clips, calculators, clocks and inside file pockets. These custom clipboards may be given to important clients or customers as a method of brand messaging via marketing efforts.
