There are many different ways to make friendship bracelets, but they are almost always made with embroidery floss. Typically made as gifts to give to friends as a token of friendship, friendship bracelets can also be made to express team spirit or just to dress up an outfit. Friendship bracelets can be worn on the wrists, as an ankle bracelet or attached to a zipper as a zipper pull. There's no wrong way to wear a friendship bracelet.
One of the most basic friendship bracelet patterns is the candy stripe pattern. A candy stripe pattern produces a diagonal striped bracelet and is made by tying half-hitch knots around each strand of embroidery floss. The candy stripe pattern can be made with two, three or four colors and the widths of the stripes can be changed by changing the order of the colors used. The candy stripe would be a good pattern for a first-time friendship bracelet maker.
The chevron friendship bracelet pattern produces a bracelet with different colors of embroidery floss forming V shapes. This pattern is made by taking five strands of embroidery floss, folding them in half to form a loop and then making a knot so that you are working with 10 strands. Once the 10 strands have been arranged, a series of four backward knots and forward knots are tied. This pattern can be made with any number of color combinations.
The bordered chevron pattern produces a result similar to the chevron pattern although the chevrons are in the middle only and there is a single color border bracing each side. This pattern also begins by folding the strands in half, looping and knotting them, but it uses a combination of backward/forward, backward, forward/backward and forward knots. This pattern uses four strands of embroidery floss.
The zigzag pattern produces stripes of color but the bracelet is zigzag-shaped. This friendship bracelet is made with at least two colors of embroidery floss and is started like the chevron and bordered chevron patterns, This pattern uses a combination of forward, forward/backward, backward and backward/forward knots to achieve the zigzag shape. The zigzag may be more challenging than some of the more basic patterns, but it produces better than average results.
