Voice Control Tips for the iPhone

Siri is the voice control personal assistant in iOS 8, the iPhone operating system. As long as your phone can access the Internet, you can give Siri verbal commands to accomplish many tasks.

Accessing Siri

In iOS 8, enable Siri by opening the Settings application and selecting General > Siri. Make sure the slider next to the Siri option is marked green to indicate the feature is turned on.

To access Siri, press and hold the Home button on your iPhone until you hear a chime and notice a waveform on the bottom of the screen. As you speak to Siri, the command text populates near the top of the screen.

  • Beginning with iOS 8, users can trigger Siri by voice by saying "Hey Siri" while the phone is connected to a power source. Turn on the Allow "Hey Siri" option in Siri settings to use this feature.

Siri Customization Options

Siri's sound and language preferences are customizable in Settings > General > Siri. Siri is compatible with more than 25 languages and has both male and female voice options, which can be found within the Voice Gender setting.
