Paper Mache Sculpture Techniques
Paper mache is a cheap way to make sculptures. You can also use it to make other items such as jewelry. Paper mache sculptors use several techniques when making things. One such technique is the addition of oil of cloves in any paper mache recipe to protect the sculpture from growing mold.

Layered Paper Mache Recipe
-
Layering generally involves using a base or armature beneath the paper mache to give it shape. Layering simply means gluing strips of paper to the sculpture. You make the mixture as a paste from flour and water: First boil five cups of water. Mix 1/4 cup of flour with some cold water before mixing it with the boiling water. Mix for around two minutes to thicken. For a thicker glue, use one cup of flour for every three cups of water. Dip the paper strips in the mixture and apply them in layers.
Paper Mache Pulp
-
Use pulp when there is no base or armature. On a paper mache head, for example, you may create the head using layered paper mache, and make individual features such as the nose with paper mache pulp. To make the pulp, start by soaking shredded paper overnight. Simmer it for 20 minutes the next day. Blend a cup of pulp at a time in a blender until you have thoroughly mixed the entire amount. Drain the mixture in a sieve, using pressure to expunge excess moisture, though the pulp should remain damp. Mix in a bowl with a cup of glue. Mix in wallpaper paste until the pulp is a desirable consistency.

Bottle Molds
-
Bottles work as a mold if you need a base for your project. You can use them in multiple ways for multiple shapes, but one example is small human figures. Clean the bottles and then glue a Styrofoam ball to the top to act as a head. Squeeze the ball until it is an egg shape and resembles a head. Layer paper mache over the top of the bottle and head until it's completely covered. Allow it to dry and then paint it.
Balloon Molds
-
Use balloons if you need a round model. Making bowls is one way to use balloons in your paper mache project. First inflate a balloon. Then prepare your paper mache using the layering recipe. Layer the paper mache over the balloon in the shape of your bowl. Make your layers thick enough to be strong when the bowl is complete. After the mixture is dry, pop the balloon and remove any remains. Your bowl should hold its shape.
