Use starburst-patterned background paper to evoke traveling faster than light.

Scrapbooks are more than just a means of displaying cherished photos. They are also a medium for displaying the subjects and aesthetics that you hold dear. Whether you are creating a scrapbook to show off photos from a sci-fi convention you recently attended or a custom scrapbook for a friend who is crazy for sci-fi, draw inspiration from the colors, customs and subjects common in science fiction.

  1. Stars

    • Many deep-space telescope photos are colorful and dramatic -- well suited to scrapbook use.

Infuse the scrapbook with motifs of heavenly bodies, such as stars, planets, asteroids and galaxies. Most science fiction, whatever the medium, features humans or creatures inhabiting a distant planet or having the ability to travel the vast stretches between the stars. Some ways to include the stars in your scrapbook include embossing the cover with a large star, using printed-out photos taken by a deep space telescope as backgrounds on some of the scrapbook pages, and featuring star-shaped stamps as accents.

    Metallic Accents

    • Sprinkle metallic accents throughout the scrapbook to evoke the gleaming spaceships and ray guns common in science fiction. For example, color pages with metallic pencils, use shiny, silvery reflective paper as a page background, and make ample use of stainless steel tags. You could also paint the entire outer portion of the scrapbook (front and back covers and binding) with coats of silver paint, let it dry, then stencil the name of the scrapbook in an angular, robotic-looking font on the front with neon green paint.

    Futuristic Palette

    • Use a palette of futuristic colors for the cover, binding, pages, photo frames, tags, accents, borders and all other artistic accouterments related to the scrapbook. You can draw a futuristic palette from a specific sci-fi series (books, movies, television shows or artwork) or from a generalized impression of sci-fi depictions. Appropriate colors for a futuristic palette include steely silver, translucent red and green (evoking illuminated panels and displays), robot gray, the inky black of deep space and the bluish-white of some stars.

    Faux Encyclopedia Page

    • Create a faux encyclopedia page from the "Encyclopedia Galactica," a fictional compendium of the knowledge of species and civilizations across the universe. For a humorous effect, create this page as a way of showcasing a familiar subject. For example, if you have a photo of your beloved dog you wish to spotlight, place the photo in the upper-left corner of the page, as often seen in encyclopedia entries. Write "Encyclopedia Galactica" in small, futuristic font along the very top of the page. Fill the rest of the page around the photo with a description of your dog the way an alien might see it: "This canid species often prefers to train a two-legged servant to perform its basic life maintenance tasks, including feeding and grooming."
