Create your own costumes for a group this Halloween.

Coming up with a unique costume for one person is difficult enough, but if you need a costume for a group of people, it becomes doubly tough. Luckily, you can make your own costumes using items you have around your house or at your local thrift store to create your group costume ideas.

  1. Scooby-Doo Gang

    • Scooby-Doo and his friends is an appropriate group costume idea for groups of five to seven people. For the smaller group, create costumes for Scooby, Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne. Additional costumes can be created for Scrappy-Doo, Scooby's little cousin, and one of the monsters they investigate. To create a Scooby or Scrappy costume, wear a brown sweatshirt with black spots on it. Wear brown dog-ears and a collar with a diamond-shaped tag on it. For Shaggy, wear a green V-neck shirt and a pair of brown pants. For Fred, wear blue pants and white shirt. Tie an orange scarf around your neck. To create Velma, wear an orange turtleneck, a brown skirt, and knee high orange socks. For Daphne, wear a purple mini-dress with pink tights. Choose any scary mask for the monster costume or use a store-bought monster outfit.

    A Six-Pack

    • For a group of six adults, create a six-pack of beer costume. To make the bottles, cut the bottom out of six large, outdoor trashcans. Use silver spray paint to paint the outside of the cans. After the spray paint dries, paint your favorite brand of beer's label on the cans. Either free-hand the label or make a stencil out of cardboard. Drill holes through the top edge of the cans and feed rope through the holes to create shoulder straps. Dress all six adults in the cans. If desired, tie them together to create the attached six-pack.

    Harry Potter Characters

    • The popular Harry Potter series hit bookshelves in 1997 and the big screen in 2001. The stories offer hundreds of characters to choose from, giving you lots of options depending on the size of your group. Choose from the main characters, such as Harry, Hermione or Ron. Alternatively, choose the teachers, such as Hagrid, Dumbledore and McGonagall. For simple costumes, wear solid black robes. Make patches for the students' costumes, such as Gryffindor and Slytherin, using colored construction paper. To distinguish the characters, choose traits that stand out. For example, for Harry, add a lightening scar and wire glasses. For Ron, dye your hair red. For Draco, dye your hair blonde.

    Movie Star and Paparazzi

    • Another costume idea that lends itself to large groups is a movie star and paparazzi. Choose one person to be the movie star. Dress that person in fancy clothes, such as a ball gown or tuxedo. Alternatively, choose a famous person to dress like. The rest of the group dresses as desired, carrying cameras, camcorders, microphones and tape recorders. They should follow the movie star around, taking pictures and trying to interview them.
