OSHA Checklist for Warehouse Inspection
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has collaborated with the International Warehouse Logistics Association to devise a checklist concerned with warehouse safety. It deals with such aspects as material handling and chemical safety. As a warehouse can be a dangerous place, filled with heavy machinery, it is important that all staff are trained in how to carry out their work in a safe way.
-
Material Handling
-
Every warehouse must have the right equipment for handling materials, and enough equipment for everyone to be able to carry out their work in a safe manner. If the correct material-handling equipment is unavailable, or it is all in use, then a worker may choose to manually move the materials, risking serious musculoskeletal injury. Every forklift operator must complete an OSHA-approved training program, as should every operator of heavy machinery.
Regular Inspection
-
OSHA regulations require the regular inspection of machinery and equipment to ensure that any risk to the operatives or those nearby is minimized. All equipment must be inspected before use to identify any areas which require repair. Checklists that prove inspections have been carried out must be filed safely for future reference.
-
Fire Escape
-
In the case of a fire, all warehouse staff must be able to exit the building via pathways that are clear from any debris. Every exit door must be clearly marked by a sign so that employees know where to go to achieve the quickest exit from the building possible. All electrical outlets must be properly covered where sprinklers are in use. All forklifts and other heavy machinery must be equipped with a fire extinguisher.
Safety Clothing
-
All operatives and personnel who set foot inside a warehouse must be wearing suitable protective clothing. At its most basic, this involves a hard hat, high-visibility vest and steel-toe boots. Other protective clothing will include eye protection and dust masks. Those who come into regular contact with hazardous chemicals must wear clothing that protects them against spillages.
