Tuition Help for Disabled Veterans in Alabama
Disabled veterans who are Alabama residents can receive money to pay their college or university tuition. They can also use the funds to pay their way through technical and other accredited postsecondary schools. Some of the educational benefits also help to pay the tuition of dependent children and spouses of disabled veterans.

Alabama Disabled American Veterans Scholarship Program

Dependents of disabled military veterans must attend postsecondary schools full-time to receive an Alabama Disabled American Veterans scholarship. Annually, scholarships are awarded in amounts that range from $200 to $3,000 as of May 2011. The numbers of scholarships awarded each year varies. Scholarships are administered through the state's Veterans Affairs office.
Post 9/11 GI Bill Tuition Assistance

Disabled military veterans who served at least 30 days on active duty before they were honorably discharged can get their tuition, books and lab fees paid for using the GI Bill. They must attend accredited colleges and universities or other postsecondary schools to receive the aid. If veterans enroll in vocational education programs, they can also get tuition costs associated with the program paid for using the Post 9/11 GI Bill. To apply for the tuition assistance disabled veterans can contact their local Veterans Affairs office.

Alabama GI Dependents Scholarship Program

Since 1947, Alabama has paid the tuition for qualifying dependents of disabled military veterans. Before their children or surviving spouses qualify for the scholarships, military veterans must serve at least 90 days on active duty during wartime. Additionally, they must have a 20 percent or greater disability that is related to military service. Up to five years of college or university tuition at an Alabama postsecondary school operated by the state is paid for through the program.
American Legion and Auxiliary Scholarship Program

Alabama also distributes grants to dependent children of disabled military veterans. The support is provided in the form of American Legion and Auxiliary Scholarships. Students must attend an accredited Alabama postsecondary school. As of May 2011, the scholarships were awarded for $850. Approximately 150 scholarships are awarded a year.
