For some students, attending a normal high school is simply not an option. It may be a student who dropped out and is now looking to go back and earn a diploma, or a teen who simply cannot learn effectively in a traditional classroom setting. There are a number of state and local programs, as well as national courses, to help students get back or stay on track.

State/Local Programs
-
Many states and local school districts have online programs available for high school students who struggle with the traditional educational setting. While some of these programs simply allow students to take courses not offered at their schools, others allow pupils to take their full high school coursework online. To see if one of these programs, many of which are available for free or a minimal cost, are available in your area check with your local public high school or school district headquarters. They should be able to tell you about what options are available to you and how to go about signing up.
National Programs
-
For those who do not have state or local options available, there are national online high school programs for students looking to complete their studies. National High School is one such program that lets students earn a diploma from home, choosing the courses they'd like to study. The program allows students to go at their own pace as they complete their coursework and is geared towards students who have been out of school for a while and looking to get back in the swing of things.

Pros
-
Online high schooling may help students who do not enjoy learning in the traditional setting. Online courses provide more course options than normal public schools, allowing students to tailor coursework to individual needs and desires. The flexible schedule allows students to decide when to do their work and pursue other activities. For students who have to work to help their families, online coursework allows the flexibility they need to continue their education while earning money.
Cons
-
The flexible schedule provided by online high school programs can be a blessing and a curse. For students who aren't self-motivated, the setting maked it easy to put off deadlines and avoid completing work on time. Students in online settings also miss out on the social aspects of high school, such as meeting friends and learning to work as a team. If the student is already a loner using an online high school program may further isolate them.
