Student Council Campaign Poster Ideas

In the weeks leading up to a student council election, bright, colorful posters line the hallways, walls and even bathroom stalls of the entire school, urging students to vote their classmates into office. From the straightforward poster announcing a candidate's name and desired position, to funny slogans and references to popular culture, student council campaign posters play an important role in the election process.

  • Brainstorm connections between a candidate's name and the position or title sought. Support a treasury campaign for a girl named Penny, for example, with a poster such as "Count on Penny for School Treasurer." You might also incorporate a candidate's name, such as Mark, into the poster slogan: "Mark 'Mark' for President."

  • Create a buzz around the school by using image editing software or old-school cut-and-paste techniques to replace an iconic image with the candidate's photograph. Riff on popular presidential campaign images, movie posters or even print advertisements. Draw on the themes of the original image to promote the student council candidate's qualifications and positive attributes.

Got Milk?

  • Reference popular advertisements and campaigns from popular culture. For example, borrow the slogan "Got Milk?" but replace the word milk with the name of the candidate. Feature a photo of the candidate wearing a milk mustache. Or riff on the Nike slogan, "Just Do It," along with encouragement to vote for a certain candidate.

Portrait of the Candidate

  • Affix a portrait of the candidate in the top left hand corner of the poster. State the candidate's name and the position sought in bold letters at the top. List below, in smaller letters, the student's qualifications for the job, his or her involvement in school activities, and any pertinent extracurricular activities.
